Eamon Penner-Dilworth is an experienced music educator, performer and ensemble director with more than 20 years of experience teaching instrumental music and conducting school ensembles. He is passionate about helping students discover confidence, creativity and joy through music. Eamon holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance – Jazz) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has worked with musicians of all ages, from primary school students to university undergraduates and professional performers.
Eamon is a casual lecturer at the University of New South Wales for seven years, teaching Fundamentals of Improvisation to undergraduate students. His approach demystifies improvisation by combining practical musical skills with creative exploration, giving students the confidence to develop their own musical voice.
He is currently in his fifth year with the Amadeus Program for Sydney Catholic Schools, where he supports school music programs through instrumental teaching, ensemble direction and curriculum-based music education. Working across a wide range of schools, Eamon has extensive experience developing young musicians through individual lessons, small-group tuition, classroom-supported programs and large ensemble rehearsals.
Alongside his teaching career, Eamon has built an accomplished professional career as a trumpeter and vocalist, performing throughout Australia and internationally. Career highlights include the 2025 world tour with The Saints ’73–’78, performances with The Crawfish Po’Boys at the Manly Jazz Festival and Woodford Folk Festival, and national television appearances with Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian. His ongoing work as a professional performer brings current industry knowledge, practical insight and authentic musical experience into every lesson and rehearsal.
Specialising in brass performance, improvisation, ensemble conducting and directing, Eamon believes the most effective learning happens when students experience success through joy, discovery and problem-solving. Rather than simply providing answers, he empowers students to become independent musicians by equipping them with the skills to think critically, listen deeply and continue learning beyond the lesson room.
Whether teaching a beginner to produce their first note, guiding an advanced trumpeter towards greater technical freedom, or leading an ensemble to perform with confidence and musicality, Eamon creates engaging and supportive learning environments where students are encouraged to take risks, embrace challenges and enjoy the process of making music.
His teaching philosophy is simple: music should be inspiring, collaborative and fun. By fostering creativity alongside strong technical foundations, Eamon helps students develop not only as musicians, but as confident and lifelong learners.
LEARN TRUMPET
Let me guide you on the foundations of learning to play the trumpet. I’ll teach you to teach yourself and offer guidance on areas to improve. The trumpet is a fun, boisterous instrument capable of igniting passion & fun but can be a wild beast at first to tame. I have experience working with developing your embouchure, creating a program of study based on your musical goals (maybe it’s just for fun!) for both absolute beginners up to experienced players looking to advance their playing.
IMPROVISATION
One of the joys of making music is having the ability to communicate with other musicians just like you’re having a conversation with a friend. My teaching method will first unlock the ability to freely play & create then develop an understanding of how to apply rhythm & harmony to add depth. Think of it like developing your musical vocabulary so that you can articulate your thoughts!
